Frequently Asked Questions

For cars registered after April 2017, the standard annual rate is £200/year. A 5% surcharge applies when paying monthly (£21/month). An Expensive Car Supplement of £440/year applies to cars with an original list price over £40,000 (£50,000 for EVs) in years 2–6 of registration, bringing the total to £640/year during that window. For cars registered March 2001–March 2017, rates range from £20/year (band A, 0–100g/km CO₂) to £790/year (band M, over 255g/km).

First-year VED rates depend on CO₂ emissions. A zero-emission new car pays £10 in its first year. Cars emitting 1–50g/km pay £115; 51–75g/km pay £135; 76–90g/km pay £175; 91–100g/km pay £195; 101–110g/km pay £220; 111–130g/km pay £270; 131–150g/km pay £680; 151–170g/km pay £1,095; 171–190g/km pay £1,650; 191–225g/km pay £2,370; 226–255g/km pay £3,950; over 255g/km pay £5,690. From year two onwards, the standard £200/year rate applies.

The Expensive Car Supplement (ECS) is an extra £440/year on top of the standard VED rate for cars with an original manufacturer's list price over £40,000. It applies from the second to the sixth year of registration (years 2–6). For electric vehicles the threshold is £50,000. After six years, the ECS stops and you pay the standard rate only. The list price used is the price when new, including options — not the current market value.

Yes — electric vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2025 pay VED for the first time. EVs registered before that date were exempt. From April 2025, new EVs pay a £10 first-year rate, then £200/year standard rate from year 2. EVs with an original list price over £50,000 also pay the £440 Expensive Car Supplement in years 2–6.

Cars registered before 1 March 2001 are taxed by engine size, not CO₂ emissions. Engines up to 1549cc pay £230/year; engines over 1549cc pay £375/year. Vehicles over 40 years old are classified as historic vehicles and are exempt from VED entirely.

Paying annually is cheaper. Monthly direct debit payments carry a 5% surcharge. For a £200 standard-rate car, monthly payments total £210 over the year compared to £200 paid annually — a difference of £10. For a car paying £640/year (standard plus ECS), monthly payments total £672 versus £640 annually, a £32 difference. Six-month payments are charged at 55% of the annual rate.
